Artist Statement:
I paint what I feel and remember. In my latest collection “My memories of Italy”, done between May 2010 and July 2011, I wanted to transmit the warmth and beauty of the Italian culture. Being of Italian origins, seeing my parents’ home town and meeting family helped me develop and challenged me to create these beautiful landscapes as I saw them. Working on these pieces has allowed me to further explore perspective in nature, something I have always been interested in. Enjoy.

Soaked in the Italian sunshine, Josie De Meo’s one woman “My memories of Italy" includes a journey to Tuscany, Venice and Naples. Whether it is an intimate iced coffee on a window sill or a Chianti bottle and wine glass, Josie invites the viewer to engage in a warm landscape and intimate street scenes. The rolling hills of Tuscany , or the cobbled walkways of Florence, even the canals of Venice invite us into the places which are the heart of Italy. We are drawn to her bold use of colour and beautiful rhythmic patterns of stone work, and hillsides of vineyards. The works give us a sense of warm camaraderie and of joie de vivre which kindles the remembered experience. Although Ms. De Meo was born in Canada, her parents talked fondly of their homeland and its rich heritage. She has captured their love and has collected her own experiences in three visits to Italy with. Working through photographs and video footage and discussing her work with her family, she finally reaches the heartfelt final compositions. She enhances the composition with a “primitive” approach to perspective which charms the viewer. Using acrylic paints she occasionally lifts the surface to a full glossy level polishing the image to its fullest. All to the works are for sale at exceptional prices.

Artist Training :Took numerous fine art courses with Aline Joanis ( Ottawa), Lydia Steeves( Ottawa), Willow ( Manitoba) , Mary Owens( USA) and Esa Nieminen( Ontario).

This particular artwork reminds me of my own honeymoon, 15 years ago,
having wine and looking out the window on to the canal.
I could still feel the breeze and hear the boats in the background.
Also I could hear the gondoliers singing in their background,
back then they were allowed to sing.
